Description: celebrating the opening of Jim Hodges: Give More Than You Take. Go on a mini tour of the exhibition, then join artist Melissa Thyden in creating a giant wall of vibrant paper flowers, a project inspired by Hodges’s stunning installation of silk flowers. Eastern Standard’s star mixologist Naomi Levy has created a signature floral cocktail for the event—pick up some cocktail-making tips in demonstrations led by Levy throughout the evening. Also at First Fridays: a temporary tattoo parlor featuring wearable art designed by Jim Hodges himself!

Description: The Cambridge River Festival is an annual celebration of the arts, attracting 200,000 per year. This free event will feature jazz, folk, roots and world music performances, dance, art demonstrations, family art-making activities and over 150 specialty food purveyors and craftfolks and artisans!

Description: Pit masters from NYC, Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina and other locations near and far descend on Madison Square Park for the annual lip-smacking food festival. In addition to some seriously tender vittles (only $9 a plate!), folks can enjoy live blues, rock and country music and catch seminars on the art and science behind the brisket and ribs.

Description:  Annual Museum Mile Festival offers free admission to some of the world's finest art collections during extended evening hours. The 23-block stretch of Fifth Avenue is home to eight participating institutions—El Museo del Barrio, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Cooper-Hewitt (whose galleries are closed for renovation), the Jewish Museum, the National Academy Museum, Neue Galerie and the Museum of the City of New York. In addition to all the art to see inside, there are plenty of outdoor festivities: face painting, chalk drawing, live music and other block-party-type events.

5th Annual Astronomy Festival on the Mall

Description: Free guided tours of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and stars as the annual Astronomy Festival on the National Mall, sponsored by Hofstra University, takes place from 6 to 11 p.m. The astronomical extravaganza will feature telescopic viewing, exhibits, hands-on activities, a multimedia presentation, and a chance to mingle with real astronomers.

Capital Jazz Festival
